Hi, my son is starting his 1st year, and will be in a double room in Glasney. I think he’s excited but he’s pretty laid back so hard to tell
He needs to get a job when he’s down there - any advice on good employers? He’s mentioned being a student ambassador? I think they’re the students who do the show-rounds on the open days?
Hi there, it's a great plan to be on campus. For jobs, there's plenty going - especially if he has any prior experience. My daughter does housekeeping 2 days a week (sometimes more) in a hotel, but she lives in Falmouth. Student ambassador is a good gig - mine's too shy 
. He can find out more about that during the first week, then there's a job fair a bit later on too. But certainly if he wants to find something on campus (convenient!) he should get ask in the first week. Also an ASDA near campus that recruits students. What's he studying? Hope he loves it!

The job fair sounds great!! He says he’ll find something when he’s there but I’ve pointed out that every other student will be doing the same 
do he needs to be proactive!

Hi we’re travelling from Liverpool on 12th. She’s staying in ocean view. Would you recommend any good doctors near by?
And any advice at all for her move? She’s doing marine and NH photography.
Firstly, good luck with it all. Secondly my daughter studies MNHP too! She was in Maritime in her first year, which I think is just next to Ocean View. When you arrive you unload everything at the accommodation then head up to the campus in Penryn for more administration registration stuff. While you're there your daughter will be able to register with the doctor's surgery. My daughter hasn't needed to see a doctor since being there (I'm touching wood right now!) so I don't have any recommendations but at least if she does need an appt she's registered.

Thanks so much for your reply. My daughter is type 1 diabetic so a bit of faffing needed with docs and prescriptions, it’s her main worry!
Is there a bus up to the college next to the accommodation or do they have to walk into town? I the train super handy. But the bus would take her straight there.
Which is the easier well? Down in town to the bus or up at the top from the station ! Would you recommend the mussel card pass thing ? Someone on here mentioned it I think.

Yes, I understand. You might even be able to register in advance if you contact the surgery directly - or possibly choose one actually in Falmouth town as the one linked to the university is in Penryn I think.
In the first year my daughter mostly took the train as it's at the foot of the accommodation building and then walked up from Penryn station to the campus. The bus is also an option but I understand the routes have changed recently.
The mussel card pass is just for the ferries I think!?!
Travel is definitely an expense we hadn't factored in correctly.

Hi my daughter is about to start and will be in maritime. How did your daughter find it, was it harder to meet others as in studios or did people mix ok?
On the drs front did your daughter register in Falmouth or penryn?

Hi there, that was my concern with the studio thing but actually all it takes is a couple of people to knock on doors and that gets the ball rolling. The first couple of days she was brave enough to at least knock on the doors of the studios either side of her. The accommodation staff organised several low-key social things and the common room at the top of the building is fun for games and stuff. So in the end, whilst it wasn't what she originally wanted, it was ideal because she got to know people but had her own personal space to be in when she wanted to!
Regarding doctors we didn't really think about it at the time, she just signed up to the Penryn Surgery because that was what everyone was told to do on the first day of filling in eleventy billion forms. She hasn't had to see a doctor at all until this week when possibly it might have been easier to be actually in Falmouth (where she has chosen to live in Years 2 and 3) but I think she said the Penryn Surgery took her about 25 minutes to get to in total, so very do-able. I guess it depends what your daughter's needs are.

Thankyou so much for your quick reply, that's very helpful. She took likes to have her own space but also wants to get to know people too.
She absolutely loved Falmouth when she came down for the open day and interview and it appears to be a very inclusive university.

Hi sorry to keep messaging you. But do you know is there a portal area or something that has course communication on? She said she hasn’t heard anything about her course other than her timetable. The time table talks about different groups but she doesn’t know what group she is in. Also random question , do the students generally have their own wetsuits and boots? She has be but not reluctant to take it. But at the same time she wants to join the surfing society!
