Hi
Just wanted to reach out and see if anyone else out there who is in the same position as me? My DD moving in next week and finding it hard to know everything that she will need!

Hi, my son started last year so I’ll help if I can. What kind of thing were you thinking? Halls stuff or for the course?

Everything 😬🤣 not sure how much she will need for accommodation. She will be staying in the mAcmillan student village. With the course is it 5 days, did you son work at all?
many thanks

Which course is she doing? MacMillan is fine, a bit out of date but super handy location wise. There’s a Sainsbury’s underneath but a small one so expensive! There’s Aldi Go in Greenwich for cheaper shopping. Buses are frequent and easy, my son loves a Lime bike (there’s a student discount) too.

My son was in four full ish days and just a singing lesson on one day. It’s full on, for sure, with some additional projects through the year. He didn’t work because he didn’t manage to find a job but plans to this year as he got pub experience this summer.

She is doing contemporary and hip hop dance. We’ve been told MacMillan has been refurbished over the summer. That’s good about the Aldi, didn’t know that. Just saw the Sainsbury’s and Tesco opposite. I think she is expecting it to be full on. So thank you for confirming that 🤦🏽‍♀️. Can I ask what is your son doing for accommodation this year? Not that I’m looking that far ahead at the moment!

Yes my son said they were updating it. He’s sharing a flat in Surrey Quays with two of his course friends, they only looked for it about May and found it quickly. It’s good in lots of ways that the London rental market works like it does, I know lots of other uni students have to decide by Christmas which must be stressful. Just to say as well, he lives TL, obviously moans about things but he is so happy. I hope your daughter gets on really well too!

What course is your son doing? Yes I heard about looking for places in Dec so that’s why I asked, so good to know. So pleased he loves it. She is really excited, but me on the other hand the time is coming round very soon and this time next week all her bags will be packed 😬 How much stuff does she need for the kitchen ?

He’s musical theatre. Yes it’s exciting and at the same time quite nerve wracking for us as parents. My son is moving back on Tuesday so well before lectures start but he can’t wait to get back to his life there. There wasn’t much space in the kitchen, one cupboard above and one below plus a shelf in the fridge and freezer. He had a fridge in his room though which was really helpful for fresh food and drinks. He had minimal cutlery and crockery plus a frying pan and another pan. Cutlery kept disappearing but I’d bought really cheap Home Bargains stuff so I wasn’t worried. I just sent replacement forks every so often 🤣 The halls have a concierge 24 hours a day which is great for any issues and they take parcels and the student gets a message on an app to come and collect. Very helpful especially at the start when he needed bits and bobs.

Did you supply the fridge in the room? I’m glad you said about the cutlery, she would take gold plated if she had her way 🤣 what about an air fryer? She’s certainly never going to be the next Mary Berry! Really appreciate you replying also!

The fridge was supplied by the halls, such a nice surprise when we got there. I don’t think air fryers were strictly allowed but I know some students had them or coffee machines and it didn’t seem to cause a problem.

Can you advise regarding washing machine and drying clothes? I’ve read different things that some places you don’t need to buy washing powder? And how much is it to use? How did your son dry his clothes?

There is a laundry in MacMillan, useable via an app and often tricky with machines out of service etc. but fine, washing was done and you can dry there too. You need to take laundry capsules/pids. Things that couldn’t tumble, he hung in his room on an over door dryer, that seemed to work ok.

I think liquid is fine too but he didn’t ever use powder. I will have to ask re cost but it added up to more than we anticipated. Maybe something like £7 per wash, so monthly was close to £30. I’ll check with him tomorrow though

I checked and it was just under 5 to wash and dry, so not quite as bad as I thought but still adds up!
Phew! Yes that’s not so bad then especially if it’s drying as well. We never use our dryer here so she will will definitely make use of that! Much appreciated you getting back to me x
