I really should have posted this first. For anyone who doesn't know;

WHAT IS CLEARING?
So, what is Clearing? And how does university Clearing work? Clearing 2021 is how universities fill any remaining places they have on their courses. From 5 July to 19 October 2021, you can apply for a course via the UCAS Clearing process if you’re not already holding an offer from a university and if the course still has places. The Clearing process gives you more time to find a course you want to study so you can start uni in September.

If you've met and exceeded the conditions of your firm choice and you've changed your mind about where or what you want to study, you can also apply for a new course through a process called Adjustment. Both UCAS Clearing and Adjustment give you the chance to find the best course for you – just in slightly different ways. To find out more about whether you’re eligible for university Clearing 2021, read below.

Make sure you are prepared for clearing;
1) Make a list of the University numbers you will need
2) Have your UCAS number ready
2) Have you grades and personal statement to hand
3) Telephone lines will be busy, if one in engaged move quickly onto the next one and then go back to it later
4) Once you have spoken to a university ensure you have noted the name of the person you have spoken to and their contact details. This will allow you to easily contact them again later if you need to
Good luck to all 2021 students

One other very important point. Make contact as soon as possible. The longer you leave it, the fewer options you will be left with.

Our experience of clearing was that it is a much simpler process than we were anticipating. So it is important to remember that there is no need to be worried.
A few other pointers would be;
a) you don't need to redo your personal statement
or
b) justify your grades.

Better than expected results?
If your results are better than expected you can also use clearing to look at universities / courses that required higher grades. This is called adjustment. Adjustment allows a student to hold on to their firm choice for five days while they look at other university options.

Clearing 2021 and important dates

Clearing is available from July to September and you can enter clearing once you have received your A Level results.
The availability universities have will be updated regularly, however the majority are added following results day.

For 2021 entry, Clearing vacancies will be displayed in UCAS's search tool from Monday 5 July 2021. Applications will be accepted until Tuesday 21 September, with Tuesday 19 October being the last date to add your choices, and for universities to make their final decisions.

I think it is worth pointing out that if you didn't meet the grade on your conditional offers that doesn't mean that you can't still speak with them. They may still be able to offer you something. Just a consideration, that you may want to call them first before looking at other Uni's and courses through clearing.

One other consideration, if you do go through clearing, you may find yourself in a telephone interview. Some universities may expect a quick phone interview, so be prepared to talk about why you think you will be a good match for the course and the University and what you can and will contribute. It may be a good idea to reread your personal statement and also highlight some of the best points from that.

As always clearing will be hectic, especially so on results day. I would suggest;

Checking the Ucas Track site as early as possible on results day and you will be able to see the status of your applications. If you are eligible to use Clearing, it will tell you so and will also provide you with a Clearing number. Make a note of the number as you will need to provide this to Universities.
Regarding your grades these will not be on Ucas Track, you will need to pick up your results to find out your actual grades.

Hello, we are new to this and my daughter is in year 13 and hoping to go to Portsmouth. I just want to make sure we aren't missing something which is important. We hope everything will be okay but if not, is using clearing normal? and if my daughter doesn't get to go to Portsmouth how will we be able to select somewhere else with a similar course. How will we know which universities have similar course's available?

Hello Cathy,

Fingers crossed for you daughter for her course at Portsmouth, its a lovely city with some great shopping at Gun Wharf Keys.

With regards to clearing, I don't think there is anything you are missing, clearing is just a route used to apply to universities. It can be used for many reasons, someone who makes a last minute decision to go to university, as well as those who want to look at different universities once they have their results.

Many universities will be giving clearing updates well ahead of clearing so you can access the latest information, you will be able to sign up to these updates and receive the information from them directly. Its best to start researching the alternative Universities and courses of interest now, so you are well prepared. You will be able to see the entry requirements and if these will be a suitable match to your daughter. There can be flexibility on grades, but I would suggest being realistic.

You will then have a list of suitable universities and courses (and the telephone numbers) if you need them on Tuesday the 10th of August. Clearing phone lines open at 8.30am - Again it is best to call as early as possible as courses will fill up, you can then call up and secure an alternative place.

It would also be a good idea to have a look at the UCAS website as that’s also full of good advice.

Best regards, Karen

Hello Karen, thank you so much for you reply and the information. We will get looking for other options as backups.

Hi, if you use clearing and apply for a new course and university will you need to redo your personal statement?

Hello Sibbs, no if using clearing or adjustment there is no need to redo a personal statement. It is probably a good idea to have you PS to hand when you are speaking with universities about the new courses you are applying for, but they will not expect you to have written a new PS. Good luck x
