What is WIWIKAU?
WIWIKAU stands for What I Wish I Knew About University.It’s a parent-led community that helps families navigate every stage of the uni journey, from choosing courses to settling in, money, housing and everything in between.
Who runs WIWIKAU?
WIWIKAU is run by Zoe and Joules, two parents who have been through the process multiple times and wanted a supportive, friendly, non-judgemental place for families.Is WIWIKAU free to use?
Yes. The Facebook group and website are both free for parents and carersWhat do all the acronyms mean?

When should my young person start applying?
Most students apply in Year 13, but some apply during a gap year.All applications go through UCAS.
Can my YP apply for 2026 entry and then defer?
Some universities allow deferrals; others don’t. They need to check with each uni before applying.
Do predicted grades matter?
Yes, predicted grades help universities decide whether to make an offer.
Where can I find information about a specific university?
Use our Parents and carers page to go straight to your YP’s university parent forum.Are Russell Group universities always better?
Not necessarily. What matters most is the right course and the right fit for your YP, academically, socially and emotionally.
Do students really need to choose second-year housing so early?
It often happens earlier than we’re used to!Some cities move quickly; others don’t.

What should my YP look for in a student house?
- Heating & energy efficiency

- Who they live with

My YP hasn’t made any friends yet. Is that normal?
Completely. Many students take months to find their people.You can use the Friendship Beacon to help them connect with others.
How do maintenance loans work?
Loans are based on household income. The lower the income, the higher the loan.Will the loan cover everything?
Often no. Most YPs need part-time work, budgeting, or parental help.We offer budgeting templates and real parent advice.
What are the hidden costs of university?

What does my YP need to take?
We have a printable Wiwikau Packing List that covers everything.Do halls provide bedding, pans, or kettles?
Most don’t. Check the accommodation website or ask in their university forum.Should we label everything?
Optional, but it helps keep things organised, especially in shared kitchens.
My YP is struggling socially Is this common?
Yes. Many students feel lonely in the first weeks or months, including neurotypical and neurodiverse students.Encourage them to join societies, go to events, speak to support teams, and take things slowly.
What is the Friendship Beacon?
It’s our space for students looking for friends, housemates or people on their course or campus.
What support is available?
Most universities offer:- Reasonable adjustments
- Study support
- Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA)
- Specialist mentors
- Quiet housing options (sometimes)
Should parents go to open days?
Completely up to you. Many YPs appreciate support; others prefer independence.We offer an Open Day Checklist to help you get the most out of the visit.
What if my YP misses lectures?
Normal. They’ll catch up, the key is communication and routine.Are contact hours low at uni?
For many courses, yes.This is part of the independent learning model.
My YP wants to come home often Should I worry?
No, lots of students do. Uni is a big adjustment.My YP wants to drop out What now?
Take a breath.Encourage them to talk to:
- Course tutors
- Student support
- Accommodation teams
- GP/mental health support
Should I track my YP on Life360 Or Find My Friends?
This is personal to your family. Many parents stop when their YP becomes settled and independent.How often should I check in?
Lots of parents do morning or evening texts, whatever works for you both.
Does WIWIKAU work with universities?
Yes, some universities choose to be official WIWIKAU partners.Is WIWIKAU for parents only?
Yes, our spaces are for parents, carers and guardians.Can we post anonymously?
