How does work?

Total newbie to the concept of study abroad (SA). When my DD was looking at Unis she gave some thought to where she would be able to go but not the practicalities. Now it is a reality and need some advice. Has anyone gone to Europe for a year abroad post Brexit? How did the finances work? Accommodation? I'm hoping Exeter give my DD all the information but not holding my breath.

We're in the same boat. My son is at Lancaster doing History but has just had confirmation that he's spending his second year in Copenhagen. Everything is a bit daunting. My son is quite relaxed. One helpful thing is that my son was put in touch with a third year who spent last year in Copenhagen and he gave some good practical advice. But glad we've got this forum to swap advice and thoughts.

I do know they get a higher maintenence loan for the year, and there are various grants, as well as the Turing scheme but not sure of the details yet.

My daughter is at York and just found out she’s going to Paris next year. She has a meeting on 16/2 and I’m hoping she gets all the info at that regarding visa, finances, accommodation, term dates etc.

My son is at Lancaster going to Spain in September for the year. He has applied to be a language assistant with the British council but apart from that I have no idea what he does about finding accommodation/visas etc. I’m sure the uni will give some info but son isn’t very reliable on going to lectures etc. I don’t think he’ll even find out where he’s going until about June!

Just posted this on the FB group - getting very worried now 😥

Complete nightmare. Son (2nd year Architecture at Portsmouth) is leaving for Vienna on Friday to study at TU for a semester. We've battled through all the paperwork, sorted accommodation, visa etc but he is now having a horrendous time trying to work out what modules to study to make up the 30ects he needs for his degree. Some of the things he would be doing at Portsmouth are only available on the masters programme at TU. Most modules are only 2ects and require 2 hrs study time per week - not sure he'll see much of Vienna! The TU site for registering is soooo complicated and confusing and he's not getting much help or advice from either uni. Starting to get really worried now - does anyone have any experience of this or any helpful advice please. The deadline for registering is supposed to be 21/2 at 23.59 but getting conflicting info even on that!
What was supposed to be an amazing experience and opportunity is looking pretty terrifying at the moment 🤦

Most students were able to go to Europe this year, and next year it should be even easier with the visa since it won't be the first time round. Funding should be available through Turing, or they might get paid via British Council or work placement. Did your daughter get the information she needs?

My daughter is off to Sweden in September 2022 to study psychology placement. Any info would be much appreciated.

I don't really have any info, but just to say I spent my year abroad in Sweden years ago and loved it. I still keep in touch with people I met that year. Whereabouts is she going?

Newcastle uni offering zero info on year abroad in Spain. Anyone know;
1. How and where do we apply for funding?
2. Do we apply for the usual maintenance grant and fees via Student Finance?
3. How do we start the visa process?
4. What funding grants are available and how and when do we apply?
5. How do we apply for accommodation?
Thank you!

My daughter chose her uni based on being able to do the year abroad. It was great motivation for her to do well because she was keen to get her first choice of uni abroad (in California)

Her uni (Swansea) have had meetings etc to help them through the process of application which has bern great. Her uni assigns them to a partner uni abroad and then they go through an application process with that uni. She got her acceptance through but it’s been fairly intense because lots of things are needed all at once with lots of deadlines all at the same time as second year final exams.

One thing which was hard was that the accommodation requires guarantee of the whole year’s rent but the student finance letter isn’t through by that point and it’s her student finance which pays for the accomodation. So that required a lot of emails back and forth.

The admin at their end wasn’t great as she’d spent ages sorting out what classes she wanted and worked out that they didn’t clash and sent over the info with all the codes but she needs pre requisite grades for some which she had (U.K. grades) but because it’s an international exchange they took some time to realise that and to take that into account. She contacted all the individual tutors but they weren’t able to help. She contacted her uni here but they’d already contacted the uni there and the uni there only finally sorted it out weeks later despite constant chasing and by that time her first choice class was full. She’s first on the waiting list now but if she wasn’t the kind of student whose really on top of everything, it could have meant she didn’t have the classes and so the whole thing would have fallen through.

A friend of hers wasn’t on top of everything and is still looking for accomodation as all the on campus accomodation is full now and they’re trying to find private rental in California which is proving to be difficult.

They’re both still getting visas sorted and are due to leave mid august 😬

I think once they’re there it will be amazing but it’s been an experience just getting everything organised for it.

It seems to be a mindfield and such a slow process until they want everything at once. My daughter is off to Rotterdam, no student accommodation 😱 and they've just emailed to say she needs to send them her living expenses - this works out at €9500 - she gets it back on arrival but it's a nightmare. Coupled with starting a week earlier than anticipated, when we're on holiday! She can't move into her accommodation until 10 days after her arrival date 🤦‍♀️. I'm sure it will work out OK in the end but there must be a better way of doing this

This has been our experience so fat :-
1. Apply for student finance as usual, 15% of usual fees to UK uni. Nothing to visiting uni from us
2. Applied for student finance as normal for maintenance loan
3. Exchange uni sorting out residency - just needs the money!
4. No grants available to my daughter
5. No student accommodation from uni, sorted out through private landlord but scams are rife
Hope it's working out OK for you
