Hi
My son has been diagnosed with APD and recommended to use an Assistive Listening Device. Currently (Yr12) he is managing well without one as class sizes are small. University will be different so looking for advise on these devices and any tips dos/donts. Will university assist in putting this in place ? Does he need a DSA assessment?
Thanks

Hi there. I work with children with many of these challenges - APD / ADHD etc - so I would love to have a chat with you to see what you have done with him to date and perhaps see what other things that can be considered to help him.
let me know if you would like to have a chat. x

Thank you so much. Would love to have a chat. He has just been diagnosed so no measures are in place just yet. Looking to gain as much information to prepare him from now on specially university and beyond. We feel more adjustments might be needed at Uni x
Can I send you a private message via email?

Just found this thread and daughter has also been diagnosed with this! Can you message me with any advice, either of you, please? Many thanks. We will be applying for DSA for 2023 entry.

Any advice on how he is finding uni life with his diagnosis is welcome! Thanks.

Hi
Apologies for the late response. We will also be applying for DSA for 2023 entry. Currently no adjustments in place as class sizes are small and it is not a noisy environment. However, university will be very different. Our consultant recommended an assistive listening device for Uni. Need to do some research on it. Any idea when you can apply for student finance and DSA.? He has difficulty hearing when there is a lot of background noise.
Thanks

My daughter has started using her assistive listening device and finds it really helpful in class when there is a lot of background noise. She uses the Roger Phonak system which is a lanyard with microphone type thing for the teacher to wear and then she has ear pieces. We will be applying for DSA. I think you do this at the same time as student finance. But happy to be corrected if not!

Thanks.. application for DSA is linked to student finance. Just wondered how soon you can open a student finance account and then apply for DSA. Have read online that DSA can take upto 14-16 weeks so would need to apply in time for a Sept start. Incidentally our consultant also recommended Phonak.., was told they cost a few thousand pounds. ??

I'm planning to start the student finance application as soon as it opens in March and will apply for dsa at the same time. Hopefully that will be enough time? Can you apply for dsa in advance of student finance? I'm going to check with my friend who applied for her daughter last academic year.
Re the phonak device, we completed a request form with our county council for a single service request, ie a hearing need, and after going round in circles for a few weeks we were contacted by the manager of the teachers of the deaf team who sorted my daughter out with a loan service for as long as she is in sixth form. Hope that helps.

Hi.: applying in March will be enough time I reckon. A paper application form for DSA is also available for those who don’t need to apply for student finance (most students would be applying for SF). Have read online that paper application is a tedious process and online is easier. Whilst applying for SF it is important to tick the DSA application box (in case you don’t or realise later you need DSA then it becomes tricky is what I have heard??) but I suppose there must be a way out.
Does your daughter have an EHC.. ? Not sure if you can get a device from council without an EHC plan. Will look into it. My son’s diagnosis of APD and ASD( high achieving and hence either was not picked up earlier) is fairly recent so not many adjustments in place just yet. He is doing fine at school but Uni life will be very different. Thank you

Lots of info here. Will apply for finance first in March then DSA. No EHCP here. And same with diagnosis which was only Oct 2022.

My son was diagnosed with APD in year 6. He is a student with dual exceptionalities-i.e. he has never been recognised as gifted and talented but has always far exceeded teacher expectations. He also doesn’t get his needs met for APD as he is bright. It sucks! Out of interest what did you ask for/get when applying for DSA?
