Newnham College

A couple of pictures from my daughter’s move in day at end of September, Sidgewick hall, Newnham. The room has a sink and fridge but isn’t massive and the walk to the showers is apparently less than ideal but my daughter loves the location so close the library, buttery and lectures on the Sidgwick faculty site.

Congratulations Parul to your DD.

Mandira (or Mandira's daughter) started in 2020 so depending on the length of her degree course may already have finished.

My DD however is going into Y2. She had a fabulous time in Y1 and hope your daughter finds it as lovely as my daughter did.

Your DD will get some college parents who will walk them through everything. I don't think DD has been allocated her college 'child' yet as best matches are based on a questionnnaire sent to the student which I suspect your DD may already have received.

If you or your daughter have any specific questions do just ask.

Thank you so much! My daughter has filled in her 'parent' and 'sibling' questionnaire. We think we are neatry there. A few questions-
1. Can they put clothes airers on radiators?
2. Is it single mattresses?
3. Can they take electric blankets?
Thank you for your time
Best wishes

Hiya. The college have put out some new rules about electrical devices so not clear. Last year DD had a kettle in her room which is pretty much essential to her as she would otherwise have intravenous tea, the kitchen is also a long walk from her room. The new guidance is no electrical item with a ‘heating element’ in the room.

So as for an airer my DD never have one. Tumble driers are free and she had one me of those plastic racks over her radiator / near her window that meant she didn’t need an airer. Also as she had a term time only licence and vacated her room each term having minimal items was practical.

Most rooms are a single mattress except for the new Dorothy Garrod building rooms which are doubles. Unless you have a medical need first years rarely get DG rooms so most likely a single.

They could possibly take an electric blanket unless they class it as having a heating element, the new rules are rather untested but DD never needed one, she switched her radiator off even in winter her room was so warm.

She didn’t even take her own pillows or duvet and used the college ones. She just had her own duvet and pillow covers. For her third term she found different pillows in her room but housekeeping swapped them for ones she liked. As they rent the rooms they are good quality and duvets and pillows deep cleaned cleaned each term.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply. All duly noted. Not having kettles will be tricky for many. Lots of useful tips. Thank you.
Is there enough shelving and fridge space for all or is there a bit of a race to get one?
Also, where do we park when dropping off?
Sorry for more questions. I thought I was done 😊

DD had a kitchen for 12 that had one lockable cupboard for each but no race for fridge as she had a fridge (and sink) in her room, albeit a little fridge. She was in Sidgwick Hall, each hall within Newnham is different, DD is squatting (all rooms same price regardless of type and room ballot held each year for new rooms…) for Y2 as she didn’t get a good position in the room ballot and liked her room.

Newnham is perfect for dropping off. Closest to Jn 12 off the motorway and no park n ride etc. Just outside the college doesn’t seem to get to busy as not in centre. Saying that we’ve always got there early in the day or not on a moving in/out day. We’ve always found space on Sidgwick Avenue. Download the Ringo parking app. You can unload, park up, stroll into town, leave, about 8 hour parking window. Nice lunch at the nearby (2 min walk) The Millworks.

Each room comes with lockable storage too so even if you have a term only licence you can often fit a lot in the storage and not bring all home each term.

p.s shelving can vary but DD had about four shelves thst looked like a built in bookcase, plus the top of her bureau plus the top of her fireplace, no problems on that front.

All really useful again. You are a godsend. Thank you so much! I might just come back with some daft questions.

No problem. The Porters are lovely so parcels delivered to college are safe and if they need anything can easily get it.

Don’t forget hangers, dressing gown, flip flops or sliders.

I also made DD a draught excluder, not because of draughts but light under the door, it gave me an excuse to visit shortly after she moved in too as it is well known that hand made draught excluders don’t travel well in the post and just have to be hand delivered…

Also as a parent bear in mind that every Porter’s lodge is a refuge, any student can approach any Plodge and ask for assistance. It is like having over 30 emergency points throughout the city. How fantastic is that?

This has made me smile 😊
Thank you so much. I am relieved to hear about the Plodges. I was impressed with the warmth shown by the staff when we went for a visit and then on offer holder's day.
I hadn't thought about the draught excluder. Good idea though. DD is looking at societies and there are so many!
I am assuming the info for Fresher's week will come through soon. The one on their website is from last year I think.
