Hi my son has started mumbling about being a paramedic! He lost interest during his A levels and has come out with 96 UCAS points. He has worked for 2.5 years and been a first aider within a trampoline park and loves this side of it. He is now Duty Manager over the park as well as the cocktail bar that’s joined to it at weekends so has experienced drunk, unconscious youngsters!!! What would his options be? He does have a needle phobia which he knows he will have to over come. Even with a diabetic sister!!!! He defo needs a year out of education but the fact he has mentioned it i feel we should investigate.
Hello – we offer
BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science and Out of Hospital Care which provides students with the knowledge and skills required to be a registered paramedic. The entry requirements are 120 UCAS points from a minimum of 2 A levels or equivalent which should preferably include a health or science-related subject excluding general studies. We also require at least 5 passes at GCSE grade C which must include Maths and English Language or equivalent. Students should have some experience of delivering care in a professional or voluntary care capacity.
As your son is below the UCAS tariff we recommend he researches a way to increase his tariff points to meet the entry requirements. This could be resitting an A-level or finding a short course which would provide him with additional tariff points. If he’s over 19 he could take an Access to Higher Education course at an FE college see
link here for an example of this.
You’re welcome to join us along with your son at our next
Undergraduate Open Day – Saturday 23 September 2023, 10am-3:30pm, CitySpace, City Campus, Chester Road, Sunderland SR1 3SD. You’ll be able to look around our facilities, visit our accommodation and chat to staff and current students.
Your son could also chat online to one of our
paramedic students via our website to get an understanding of what’s involved in the course and life as a student at Sunderland. Hope this helps.
