Hi, we're in the UK and my son graduated this July. The job season for the role he needs next seems to have closed (Part 1 Architectural Assistant) so he is looking at opportunities to add value to his CV and keep busy until jobs start opening up again next year. He's discovered an agricultural/architectural opportunity in Brazil, rural not cities and has applied, and been accepted to go for six months to a year. I never worried about him being away at Uni, he got on fine, did well and I had no concerns or qualms whilst he was there. However this is different. I don't want to dampen his enthusiasm or his dreams but I'm seriously worried. About safety, dangerous animals, health issues, you name it. He arranged all of Uni himself, his choice, and I was never that helicopter parent, so I'm in unfamiliar territory here. He's done all the legwork on this himself, he's funding it himself from a temporary job he has at the moment. He's 24, so a grown up.
He's going to do it and we, as a family, are supporting this but can anyone out there calm my fears and give me some advice on how to deal with this please? If this situation is as it seems, this is a great opportunity to help him stand out from the crowd. He's travelled solo before but only to Europe. The thought of Brazil scares me and I can't get past this. I'm also worried that with the length of the opportunity he'll miss next year's window of jobs as well. As Architecture is a 7 year course if you keep to the accepted timeline this will delay his progress to Chartered status.
This is a great community on WIWIKAU and I know there are lots of international parents, so I'm reaching out.
Thanks all.
