How do you know what undergraduate accommodation is best for you?
When it comes to university accommodation, there are a few different options to consider. All have their merits and downsides, but you need to consider which option suits you and your situation best.
After all, finding somewhere you'll be happy to live is an important part of uni life.
Let’s break your options down…
Halls of residence (on or off campus)
Halls can be owned by the university or a private company. This is a popular choice among first-year students.
Very sociable and an easy way to meet other students.
A cheaper option, with water, electricity and broadband usually included.
Can be competitive to get a place in your first or second choice of halls.
If you prefer a quieter living situation, the social aspect could be a bit overwhelming.
Shared housing
This is a more popular option for second and third-year students but some first-year students choose to go into shared housing too. Contact your university to find out how you can get in touch with others who are looking into this option.
You can choose who you live with.
You have more independence and choice around the type of accommodation you want - flats or houses.
It could be a bit harder to meet other students as you aren’t surrounded by as many people.
There will be more admin for you to organise, such as bills for example. If this is your first time living away from home, this may not be ideal.
Living at home
If you’re attending a university that is near to your family home, you could live there and commute to uni.
You’ll save a lot of money on accommodation.
If you’re lucky, you’ll have dinner and laundry taken care of!
Again, it could be a bit harder to meet other students as you aren’t surrounded by as many people.
You won’t be experiencing the same level of independence as you would in accommodation outside of the family home.
